Description
This uniquely shaped fruit is called Physalis, or also known as Cape Gooseberries referring to the cape-like husk encasing the fruit. The husk of the physalis is called calyx and they protect the fruit from pest, dirt and weather. If the fruit is left inside the husks, its shelf life at room temperature is about 30-45 days. The berry contained inside is golden yellow to orange in color and is small, about the size of a cherry.
They have smooth and shiny skin and almost perfectly round. These features give physalis an attractive appearance and for that reason physalis is often used to decorate cakes and other desserts. Physalis contains tiny edible seeds and the inside structure looks similar to a tomato.
Physalis tastes tangy and sweet and some describe the taste as something similar to pineapples. They can be eaten in various ways either straight away or by dipping them in sweet condiments such as chocolate, yoghurt or fondant icing. It makes a great addition to cereals and desserts and can also be cooked into jams or pies.
