Exotic Fruits Egyptian Strawberry

Egypt has been among the top 5 strawberry producing countries since the year 2000. While admittedly Egyptian strawberries aren't as sweet as Korean or European strawberries they are the cheapest strawberry around. Egyptian strawberries are moderately sized and while their sour tastes might be less appealing to be eaten straight off, they make excellent ingredients in cooking and desserts such as strawberry sauce, strawberry frosting and even in smoothies. By adding sweet ingredients such as sugar, honey or even chocolate, the sour taste can be complemented perfectly and find its way into many recipes. Even by simply sprinkling some sugar on top of and mashing them a little bit can turn them into nice tasting snacks.

Strawberries are very low in saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium. Coupled with a good amount of dietary fiber, strawberries make a good snack for weight watchers. Similar to most other superfruits, strawberries also contains antioxidants and a generous serving of vitamin C.

Nice strawberries should be uniformly red, without white collars. Look for the ones with fresh green top and avoid dried or damaged ones. Do check for mold, bruises or any visible damage. If buying in packages make sure to check the ones in the bottom as well. While big size is usually a nice thing to look for in many fruits, this is not usually the case with strawberries. Medium and small strawberries usually packs more flavour and taste better than very large ones.
