Calcium carbonate is the main source of calcium oxide (CaO), which is necessary for making ceramics.
Calcium carbonate is blended in the ceramic mass to obtain the high level of dilatation necessary for the right ratio between the ceramic piece and the glaze.
The chalk permits the development of gelignite and anorthite minerals, which ensure the mechanical resistance of the materials. In addition the chalk creates porosity through its own de-carbonation.
There are two major segments of the ceramic market: ceramic glass bodies and porous ceramic tiles. Calcium carbonate is one of the two main components in ceramic silica and an economical source of calcium oxide.
Calcium oxide acts as a melting agent at high temperatures in the furnace (1,050°C) in addition to improving the mechanical and chemical strength of the glass body and reducing the shrinkage from firing.
