Description
Activated carbon has been used since the early part of the 20th century for water treatment, water purification, volatile organic chemicals and pesticide residual removal. Activated carbon removes pollutants by capturing chemical compounds on the porous surfaces.
The high porous structure of activated carbon provides a very large surface area for adsorption. Generally, the smaller the particle size, the higher the initial removable efficiency. A cross section of an activated carbon particle looks like a beehive. The porosity of the carbon is defined by the volume of the pores of the carbon.
The uses of Activated Carbon are as follows:
- Filtration in waste water treatment systems;
- Filtration in water purification systems;
- Purification processes in chemicals plants;
- Gold recovery process;
- Filtration in pollution control for environmental protection; and
- Many others gas and liquid phase purification processes
